Bias in Media

Hey, this one is short and sweet. I want you to read, watch, listen or do any combination thereof of news reports, paying careful attention to how the information is presented to you. Please look at two pieces between tonight and Sunday evening and post your comments on this blog by Monday sometime.
I watch lots of different outlets to get a flavor for who does what, but I expect most of you have limited time and tend to get your news from the same source each day. I am hoping that this little experiment will help me to flesh out my thoughts on this subject. That, in turn, may be of help to people who wish to stay in the know, but may be misled from time to time by the news organizations they watch.
So, what do you say, take the time! I'll have my two posted by Monday AM.

  1. my first of two. This week w/Christiane Amanpour on ABC. She interviewed Tim Kaine, Head of the DNC extensively about the elections on November 2. She did not question one remark he made during the entire interview about the substance of the Democrat's platform. Nor did she challenge any statement he made about any candidate running, especially those people running as Tea Party people.
If a less informed person watched this show today, he/she, if trusting of ABC, would certainyl come away with a biased view of the issues and people running in this year's elections.

  2. It didn't take too long to come up with my second example. This one comes from NPR and is called Austerity: A virute that could have us paying twice.
Right from the getgo we know it is opinion. Whenever "could" is used you know it is not factual. This is part of NPR's All Things Considered" series.
The thrust of this segment is do not save, because if everyone does it will be useless and no benefit will derive from it. When you wade through the arguments, there are no arguments worth considering. The entire piece fits nicely with the thought that spending overcomes all else and that ultimely, something will happen to bail us out.
